Going against laws of free trade market is like building a dam of sieves: Chinese FM spokesperson
(ECNS) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson has urged U.S. officials to stop taking China as an enemy and follow the rules, principles, and laws of the free trade market.
"China never bets against the U.S. and has no intention to challenge or unseat it. The U.S. needs to have a right understanding of China, work with China to earnestly deliver on the important common understandings reached between the two Presidents in their meeting in San Francisco," said Wang Wenbin at a press briefing on Monday.
Wang made the remarks when asked to comment on U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo's statements at a national defense forum in Simi Valley, California.
Raimondo called China "the biggest threat we've ever had" and stressed “China is not our friend.”
U.S. President Joe Biden once noted that the U.S. is not seeking to halt China's economic development or scientific and technological progress, however, the remarks of the U.S. official contradict this, Wang said.
He noted that Raimondo's remarks would hardly win the trust of China and the rest of the world, and revealed the deep-seated Cold War mentality and hegemonic mindset of some in the U.S.
The U.S. should stop viewing China as an enemy, correct the wrong move of carrying out major-country confrontation under the pretext of competition, and avoid saying one thing and doing another, he added.
Going against the rules, principles and laws of the free trade market is like building a dam of sieves—no matter how hard you try, the water will run through the sieves to where it is heading, the spokesperson cited some comments on a Chinese social media platform as saying.
